As I planned a large part of my tour via the internet (not to mention published my travelogue...) a list of helpful pages I used might be useful. Use these for further information for your holiday planning or to just find out more about Scotland.
Scotland Information:
Various websites with general information about Scotland and travelling in Scotland
Armin's travelogues - my own travelogues, including visits to Scotland 1997-2001
Isle of Islay - More blatant self-promotion. My own pages about the Isle of Islay
Scottish Tourist Board - The official site from the tourist board
The Internet Guide to Scotland - Joanne Mackenzie-Winters excellent pages with lots of information about many places in Scotland
Historic Scotland - Owner of various historic sites in Scotland including Melrose Abbey, Edinburgh Castle and Skara Brae
The National Trust for Scotland - more attractions throughout Scotland including Culloden Battlefield, Charles Rennie Mackintosh's Hill House and Iona
Visit Shetland - The Shetland Tourist Board, very helpful and friendly.
Hotels & Transport:
Websites from hotels and ferry companies, helpful links to book tickets or check timetables
Caledonian MacBrayne - operates most of the ferries to the islands on the west coast
P&O Scottish Ferries - operates the ferries to Orkney and Shetland
Port Charlotte Hotel - My favourite hotel on the Isle of Islay with great views over Loch Indaal.
Dunain Park Hotel - Excellent country house hotel near Inverness and Loch Ness
Kinloch Lodge - My favourite hotel to stay in on the Isle of Skye. Excellent food and great location.
Allan Guest House - Very nice guest house in Aberdeen, close to town centre yet quiet.
Communication & Internet:
Information about mobile internet etc. How I updated this site while I'm on the road
Mozilla.org - best browser to view this site ;-) Best support of the W3C standards for HTML and CSS
NoteTab Pro - The editor I use to write these pages. Just markup, no WYSIWYG and all that nonsense...
TopStyle Pro - The best stylesheet editor I know. Essential to work with CSS.
Vodafone UK - The mobile phone company I used, GPRS coverage was surprisingly good.
Travelogues
Scotland Travelogues - at the Travel Library, one of the best collections I know.
